Garden design

The soil first, the plan after

Designing a garden is not filling a plot: it is deciding where you sit in the evening, what you see from the kitchen window, what flowers when. We draw outdoor spaces made to last, with timber, stone and plants that belong to this climate.

We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.

It all starts on site. We look at the soil, the slope, the wind, the views to hide and the ones to keep, what you will really do with your garden, and what you will not have time to look after. From that comes a plan: paths, terrace, beds, planting plan, lighting if needed.

We work with what is there rather than against it. An old tree is nearly always kept; an old wall is restored instead of knocked down; a slope becomes a flight of sleeper steps or a low dry stone wall. Plants are chosen hardy, nectar-rich wherever possible, and placed where they will be happy, not where they look good on a drawing.

The work can be phased over several seasons if the budget calls for it: the heavy work first, planting in autumn, finishing afterwards. And we stay on after handover. The first year of a garden decides what it will become.

What this covers

  1. Planting plan

The right plant in the right place: aspect, soil, mature height, flowering spread across the year. A clear plan, which you keep.

  2. A garden from start to finish

From earthworks to planting, a single contact who draws, prices and builds, and who answers for the whole.

  3. Establishment follow-up

The first year: watering, formative pruning, replacements if needed. A garden is handed over alive, not finished.

How it works

  1. The first visit

We come to you with nothing prepared. We talk about what you really do with your garden, about what you see from the kitchen window, and above all about what you will not have time to look after.

  2. The site survey

Measurements, slope, soil type, aspect, trees to keep, buried services. We also record boundaries and party lines: a bed or a tree planted too close to a fence ends up as a dispute with the neighbours.

  3. The plan

A plan drawn to scale: paths, terrace, beds, planting plan with mature heights. We present it at your home and correct it with you. It is normal for it to change two or three times before it is the right one.

  4. The pricing

A written quote, itemised line by line, separating what gives the garden its structure from what can wait another season. You must be able to cut the project in half without it losing its sense.

  5. The works

Earthworks, masonry, timber, then planting last. Our own teams do all of it: one contact from the first cut of the spade to the last perennial, and one person who answers for it.

  6. The first year

We come back: watering to help plants establish, formative pruning, replacing anything that has not taken. A garden is handed over alive, not finished. It is the first year that decides what it will become.

The right season

Autumn is the planting season: the soil is still warm, the rain comes back, and the tree spends the winter making roots rather than leaves. The heavy work (earthworks, masonry, terrace) is better done in spring and summer, when the ground carries machines without breaking up.
