Stump removal

The last trace of the tree, cleanly erased

A stump left in place regrows, draws fungi and ties up the spot for years. We usually take it out by grinding, by digging it out when the project calls for it, and we leave ground ready to live again.

We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.

Grinding is our standard method: a grinder mills the stump in successive passes, down to thirty or forty centimetres below ground level. No gaping hole, no heavy machine churning up the lawn. The machine goes through a ninety centimetre gate, and an ordinary stump is done within the morning.

When something has to be built afterwards (a terrace, a wall, an extension), grinding is not enough: we dig out the stump and its main roots with a mini excavator, then clear the ground of surface roots. It is heavier work, and we only suggest it when it is genuinely needed.

The hole is then filled with topsoil, compacted in layers, and sown or replanted according to your plans. The grinding chips stay with you if you want them: they make excellent mulch for established borders. And if you replant a tree, we will tell you where. Never in exactly the same spot.

What this covers

  1. Stump grinding

Milling down to 30 to 40 cm below ground level. The quickest and least invasive way back to a flat surface.

  2. Full removal

Stump and main roots dug out with a mini excavator, when a building or a demanding planting has to take the place.

  3. Making the ground good

Filling with topsoil, oversowing or replanting: the garden keeps no scar.

How it works

  1. The survey

We come and look at the stump: diameter, species, age, and above all what runs underneath. A cable, a water pipe, an irrigation line. A grinder cannot tell the difference, so we locate and mark before the machine comes out.

  2. The quote

Written, itemised, free. It states the method chosen (grinding or removal), the depth planned, what happens to the chips, and whether the hole is filled or left as it is. Nothing starts without your agreement.

  3. The grinding

The grinder mills the stump in successive passes, down to thirty or forty centimetres below ground level. Sheeting on nearby walls and borders: milling throws material about. For an ordinary stump the job is done within the morning.

  4. The filling

The hole is filled with topsoil, compacted in layers to avoid it sinking, then sown or left bare according to your plans. The ground keeps settling for a few weeks: keep a bucket of soil in reserve.
