Landscape masonry
Stone, laid for a hundred years
Setts, paving, walls and low walls: landscape masonry is the skeleton of the garden. We do it the old way where we can, right down to dry stone, built without a drop of mortar.
We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.
A dry stone wall stands by gravity and by craft: each stone chosen, turned, wedged; a batter given to the face; through stones that cross the thickness. Built properly, it lasts a century, and it houses what concrete excludes: lizards, insects, ferns in the joints. It is the firm’s favourite masonry, and demand grows from year to year.
For driveways and surfaces that carry traffic, the foundation makes the difference: geotextile, compacted layers, laying to a line, the right jointing. A driveway carries tonnes several times a day. Ours is built for that, not just for the photograph at the end.
Retaining walls are sized seriously: drainage behind, weep holes, a footing suited to the load. Depending on the site, we build them in stone, in faced blocks or in solid oak sleepers. Holding back earth is a structure, not a decoration.
What this covers
Setts
Natural stone or concrete setts on a compacted foundation: yards, drives, thresholds.
Paving
Stone or ceramic slabs for terraces and paths, set to a line.
Driveway
A foundation sized for vehicles passing again and again. The difference is invisible and decisive.
Retaining wall
Drainage, footing, bonding: holding back earth properly, in stone, in blocks or in solid oak.
Dry stone wall
Built without mortar, a refuge for wildlife. Our speciality, and our pride.
How it works
The survey
We measure the levels, the slope, the existing drainage and the soil type. A retaining wall cannot be drawn by eye: first you survey the height of earth to be held.
The quote
Written and itemised: type of stone, depth of layers, method of laying, drainage planned, what happens to the spoil. Free, and nothing starts without your agreement.
The earthworks
Excavation, spoil removed, geotextile, foundation built in compacted layers. It is the heaviest item and the only one that cannot be put right afterwards.
The building
Laying to a line for setts, stone by stone bonding for a wall. In dry stone, every stone is chosen, turned and wedged by hand: batter, through stones, not a drop of mortar.
The finishing
Joints, kerbs, junctions with the lawn or the terrace, rubble taken away. Masonry work makes a lot of mess: we leave when it is clean.
