Rainwater harvesting
Winter rain waters the dry summers
An average roof receives tens of thousands of litres of soft water every year, the best there is for a garden. Letting it run into the drain and then watering with drinking water no longer makes much sense. We install what it takes to keep it.
We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.
From a simple butt connected to a downpipe to an underground tank of several thousand litres, it all depends on the roof area and on what you water. We size it from your actual roofs, not from a catalogue. We also build the tank into the earthworks of a job already under way where we can: that is when it costs least.
A complete installation includes filtration upstream, an overflow directed to somewhere it can soak away (a bed, a swale, never the drain where it can be avoided) and, for underground tanks, a pump that feeds the garden tap or the irrigation. Rainwater, soft and free of lime, is also the best there is for greenhouses and seedlings.
We also install water treatment for the uses that call for it. And if a pond or a green roof are among your plans, the three are best thought about together: it is the same water cycle, at the scale of your plot.
What this covers
Underground tank
Several thousand litres, out of sight beneath the lawn, best installed while earthworks are already open.
Above ground butt
A barrel or tank connected to a downpipe: simple, immediate, effective for beds and the kitchen garden.
Water treatment
Filtration and treatment according to use, from fine irrigation through to the permitted uses inside the house.
How it works
Working out what you need
We measure the roof area that can actually be connected (the slopes that run the right way, not the area on the drawing) and set it against local rainfall and what you really water. The question is never to keep it all, but to keep what will be used.
The quote
Written, itemised, free. It states the volume chosen and why, where the tank goes, the filtration, the run of the overflow and the earthworks if there are any, with the smaller option priced alongside so you can compare.
Installing the tank
For an underground tank: excavation, bedding, graded backfill and a flush access cover, best installed while earthworks are already open. That is when it costs least. Above ground, it all comes down to the base: a thousand litres full weighs a tonne, and a slapdash slab tips the whole thing over by the first winter.
The connection
Downpipe taken up, a filter upstream to hold back leaves and moss, overflow directed to somewhere it can soak away (a bed, a swale) rather than to the drain. Then the pump and the garden tap: we leave when the water runs and you know how to use it.
