Lawns

Sown, laid, or openly artificial

There are three ways to have a lawn, and only one is right for your ground, your timescale and your use. We do all three, and we will tell you plainly which one is yours.

We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.

It all starts below the surface: breaking up compaction, levelling, fine soil, and a seed mix suited to shade, heavy use or drought. A sown lawn is the cheapest and, in the long run, the best rooted; it asks for a season of patience and a few well judged waterings. It is the one we recommend when nothing is pressing.

Turf gives a dense lawn you can walk on within days, on the same careful preparation. It is the preparation that makes it take. Ideal for handing over a finished garden, edging a new terrace, or making good properly after building work.

Artificial grass, finally, has its place, its proper place: a shaded yard where nothing grows, a bank impossible to mow, the surround of a pool. We lay it on a draining base, neatly edged. And when we are asked for it to replace a lawn growing in open soil, we say what we think: living soil is better, and we know how to sow it.

What this covers

  1. Sown lawn

A lawn rooted for the long term: soil preparation, chosen seed, first cut included.

  2. Turf

Dense and usable within days, on preparation identical to sowing. That is what does all the work.

  3. Artificial grass

For areas where nothing else holds: shaded yards, banks, pool surrounds. Laid on a draining base, with no illusions sold alongside.

How it works

  1. The state of the soil

We look at what lies under the grass: soil type, compaction, drainage, shade, expected use. That is what decides the seed mix, and sometimes the conclusion that a lawn will not hold here.

  2. The preparation

Breaking up compaction, mechanical weeding, topsoil added if needed, levelling and then a fine tilth. It is the bulk of the work, and it is the same whether the lawn is sown or laid.

  3. Sowing or laying

Cross sowing of the chosen mix, rolling, first watering; or turf unrolled with tight joints, cut at the edges and rolled straight away. Turf is laid on the day it is delivered, never the day after.

  4. The follow-up

We leave you a written watering schedule, and we come back for the first cut. It is that first cut that makes the grass tiller and thicken; it is part of the job.

The right season

Spring and autumn, never in high summer: seed needs warm soil and steady moisture, and a lawn laid in July calls for a quantity of water we would recommend to nobody. Late summer and early autumn remain our best window. The grass establishes without competition and goes into winter with roots down.
