Kitchen garden & greenhouse
Vegetables at hand height
A raised bed in solid oak, a greenhouse set on a proper brick base: we build kitchen gardens made to crop for a long time, and to still look right in winter, when it is the structure that carries the garden.
We work from southern Luxembourg up to Mersch.
Our raised beds are made from solid oak sleepers, a timber that lasts for decades without treatment. The height is up to you, from a simple edged square to a bed at hand height that spares your back. We fill them in layers, the way a hügel bed is built: woody material at the bottom, compost, fine soil. The bed crops from the first season.
Depending on the style of the garden, the structure can also be built in stone (a low dry stone wall that stores heat) or in metal, which is plainer. For greenhouses, we prepare the foundations and the brick base, then put up the structure: traditional glass, metal, or polycarbonate depending on use and budget.
A properly fitted out greenhouse changes everything: staging, a water butt connected to the gutters, automatic vents that handle the airflow without you. That is the difference between a greenhouse you use and a greenhouse you give up on in July.
What this covers
Raised bed
Solid oak sleepers, height of your choosing, layered filling ready to plant.
Timber, stone or metal
The structure suits the garden, and the back of the person gardening.
Glass greenhouse
The traditional greenhouse, in horticultural glass on a brick base. The finest, and the longest lasting.
Metal greenhouse
Aluminium or steel frame, plain and maintenance free, for working kitchen gardens.
Polycarbonate greenhouse
Light, insulating, affordable: the right choice to start out or to shelter seedlings.
Fitted out greenhouse
Staging, watering, automatic vents, rainwater collection: equipped to serve all twelve months.
How it works
The visit
We look at the sunlight, the access to water and the distance from the house: a kitchen garden you cannot see from the kitchen is a kitchen garden you forget to water. We also ask how your back is. That is what decides the height of the beds.
Setting out
We mark the beds out on the ground with string and let you walk around them before anything is fixed. Six hours of sun a day at least, sixty centimetres between two beds for the wheelbarrow, and a water point within hose reach.
The building
Solid oak sleepers jointed and pegged, set on a levelled base protected from voles by wire mesh. For a greenhouse, we pour the footing and build the brick base before assembling the structure.
The filling
In layers, the way a hügel bed is built: woody material at the bottom, compost halfway up, fine planting soil on top. The wood breaks down slowly and feeds the bed for years; you will simply need to top it up by a few centimetres each spring.
The right season
Winter is the right season to build: the garden is dormant, the beds and the greenhouse base go up without trampling anything. Filling and the first planting follow in spring, as soon as the soil warms up.
